Valletta
Valletta is a beautifully preserved 16th century walled city.
It was described by Sir Walter Scot at a 'city built by gentlemen
for gentlemen'. It is a very small city and forms a rough
rectangle at the tip of the peninsula at the Northeast coast
of Malta.
The city has a series
of squares, each surrounded by a number of palaces and cathedrals.
It is a city oft visited by tourists. The city has a population
of 7048 and is the capital of Malta. The city was founded
by Jean de Vallette the Grandmaster of the Order of Saint
John in 1566.
A number of buildings
were constructed by the Knights and later by the British in
this city. The city contains several historic cafes, meeting
places and restaurants. It has two natural harbours-Marsamxett
and the Grand Harbour. It is Malta's major port with unloading
quays at Marsa, a cruise-liner terminal and duty free stores.
Floriana
Floriana, a suburb of Valletta caters to those who cannot
afford the property costs of Valletta. This suburb is a jumble
of buildings and alleyways with despicable sanitary conditions.
The area known as Manderaggio was partly demolished in 1950s
to give way to housing colonies. Traffic within the city of
Valletta is very restricted and some of the principal roads
are completely pedestrian areas. This city is known for its
football club.
Gozo
Gozo is an island that has a distinct character of its own.
The pace of life is slower and very few tourists visit it.
However, it has its share of medieval buildings, prehistoric
temples and would be attractive to those who wish to avoid
the rush of tourists. The commercial centre of this island
is Victoria. This city is a 17th century which has a laid
back feel.
Victoria (Rabat)
This town is the capital of Gozo. The town has a total population
of about 6000. The view of the entire city can be obtained
from the top of the Citadel or 'Gran costello'. The Norman
house on the Citadels ground is an interesting site to visit
as the folk museum is located there.
Mdina
Mdina is a 3000 year old city. It is full of baroque buildings
and narrow cobblestone streets. It is located on a rocky outcrop
about 15 Km west of Valletta. This city is often called the
'Noble city' or 'Citta Notablile' because a number of Malteste
aristocratic families who live here. The Norman Palazzo Falzon
built in 1495 is the pride of the city and is extremely well
preserved. There are a number of tourist spots in this city
which attract visitors from abroad.
Hagar Oim
Hagar Qim was built in 3600 BC and is the centre of Neolithic
temples and contains some of the oldest known structures built
by humans in the world. The Megalithic temple complex is adorned
with carved animals and idols, sacrificial altars and oracular
chambers made with flint and obsidian tools. Giant limestone
ovals have been laid out in a pattern that has been compared
to mother goddess figurines found on the site. The greatest
attraction of the place is the view of the Mediterranean and
the island of Filfla. Hagar Qim lies about 15 km southwest
of Valletta.
Comino
Comino is a sleepy island in Malta. The greatest attraction
in this island is the number of bays where swimming is fun
and snorkelling.
Cottonera
Cottonera has three cities-Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua.
Cottonera has a ship building centre that was built during
the middle ages. A number of 17th century fortifications can
be found around this city. It is not much visited by tourists.
However, the Maritime Museum records Malta's naval history
and the Folk museum in Vittoriosa caters to those with a macabre
taste. The latter displays all the Inquisitors tools of torture
and the hall of Judgement which is a dungeon.
To the southwest is the Hypogeum which consists
of a 4400 year old underground network of caves, tunnels and
rooms all curved out of rock with flint tools.
Inland Sea
Inland Sea stretches to the western coast of Gozo and has
one of the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean. It
is a secluded spot with a pool o clear water and pebbly sand.
It is sheltered by sheer cliffs. The greatest attraction here
is the Azure Window which is a giant rock arch in the cliff.
Mosta
Mosta is a tourist point. It is well known for the massive
church which has the largest unsupported dome in the world.
The diameter of the dome is 40 metres. The design of the dome
is supposed to be based on the Pantheon in Rome.
Zejtun
Zejtun is a small town in the south of Malta. It has a total
population of 11,379 persons. This town is also known as Citta
Beland. A number of Roman remains including a Roman Villa,
a Church dedicated to St.Catherine of Alexandria and a number
of chapels can be found in this town. Various new villages
have now been added to form a part of the parish of Zejtun.
A number of historical battles have been fought here. Olive
oil production is one of the main industries in this city.
Birkirkara
Birkirkara is a largish city with 25000 inhabitants. It is
located in central Malta. It has many interesting spots such
as the Old Railway station which is now a public garden, the
aqueducts near Mriehel and St Helen's basilica. The feast
of St Helen is the greatest event in the city and attracts
huge crowds.
Birzebbuga
Birzebbuga is a town with a population of 8000 people. The
port of St Georges Bay is located in this city. The name of
the town means 'land of olives'. This town is well known for
ice age relics and fossils found in the cave called Ghar Dalam.
The church in this town is dedicated to St.Peter of the Chains.
Sliema
Sliema is a town that is located on the Northeast coast of
Malta and is a relatively modern town. It is very popular
with tourists and a commercial centre. It is known for its
large population of English speaking people. It has some of
the largest coastal resorts and is a centre for shopping in
Malta. A number of restaurants, cafes are found here.
The commercial and residential areas are extremely
well developed and attract the wealthy citizens of Valletta.
Elegant villas and town houses line the streets. The city
offers a stunning view of Valletta and the sea. It is a great
place for the walking enthusiast. There are a number of churches
in this town.
St Julian's
St Julian's is a town in Northern coast of Malta. It is known
for its tourism oriented businesses. A number of bars, nightclubs
attract tourists. It is also known as the home town of Bean
growers. St.Julian is the patron saint of the twon.
